While there were numerous enticing packages to choose from, our hearts were set on the "Public Housing - Into the HDB Heartlands Tour." For those familiar with me, you might already understand why I opted for this reward over more opulent and Instagram-worthy tours. It all boils down to my passion as an urban planner. The subject of public housing resonates deeply with me because, upon joining the government, my initial projects revolved around housing and resettlement. It was during this time that I witnessed firsthand the dire housing situation in the Philippines. During the tour, we had the pleasure of meeting Jasmin Wong and Brandon Tee, who expertly guided us through the experience. Alongside us were fellow tourists hailing from Korea, and Thailand. The tour led us to Toa Payoh Central, where we learned about the historical significance of Singapore's first HDB town. We also discovered the essential amenities that enhance residents' daily lives and were captivated by the harmonious coexistence of various generations of HDB flats in Singapore. Jasmine and Brandon also introduced us to Tengah, the first car-free town center in Singapore, and perhaps even in the whole world. Our journey culminated at the HDB Atrium, a communal space that fosters community engagement through activities and exhibitions. The tour gave us the unique opportunity to intimately observe how the majority of Singaporeans live, work, and engage in recreational activities. It also served as an invaluable educational experience, providing us with profound insight into Singapore's urban planning methods. Following the tour, one conclusion resonated with me: the cornerstone of Singapore's successful public housing program lies in its well-crafted policies. If you plan to visit Singapore, I highly recommend this tour. You will be amazed and envious of Singapore's holistic approach to providing public housing.
