Starting from Chinatown MRT station at the heart of Chinatown, we’ll take a leisurely stroll through various parts of Chinatown, and I will relate to you quaint places and facts that only a former denizen can. From the perspective of a child who grew up here in the 70’s in her formative years, the Chinatown etched in my memory is a vastly different one. Come join me and get to know a Chinatown of a bygone era.

Chinatown MRT Station Exit A at Pagoda Street
Maxwell Food Centre
9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
You will see one of Singapore’s oldest wet markets, stalls selling sundry goods, and have our local breakfast at the hawker centre in the same complex.
Get a rare glimpse into the lives of Chinatown’s early residents. Located within three beautifully-restored shophouses on Pagoda Street, the Chinatown Heritage Centre is the only place in Singapore with the original interiors of its shophouse tenants in the 1950s recreated.
Take a stroll down the busy thoroughfares in the heart of Chinatown, and imbibe in the pulse of a place that permeates with history. Many of these roads have been pedestrianised so walking through them is a joy.
Hear what we I have to say about the street upon which this temple is located. It is “deadly”. I know because I used to stay here as a child in the “bad old days”.
Get to see Singapore’s famous HDB (or Housing Development Board) flats up close.
We will take a relaxed walk through elegant, restored shop houses and enjoy the sophisticated interplay of shopping, dining, history and modernity displayed in an eclectic mix.
Experience first hand the sight, sounds and smells of a quintessential hawker centre in Singapore. Maxwell is both popular with locals and overseas visitors.
